A note on when emergency dental care in Annandale, VA is appropriate

With many dental services, we can generally provide a list of conditions or situations that make said procedure ideal; for instance, Invisalign orthodontic treatment is great for patients with bite problems, misalignment, and gaps between teeth. With emergency dental care, there is more of a “gray” area. The American Dental Association reports that more than two million people visit the Emergency Room each year for the treatment of oral conditions. Often, these conditions are related to intense tooth pain caused by deep decay and oral infections. These conditions are highly preventable with routine visits to Evergreen Dental Wellness for proactive check-ups and professional cleanings. Dr. Fischer provides guidance on oral care at home and treatments in the office to halt progressive decay or gum disease. These problems are easier to treat, and their effects can be reversed, when identified and addressed early in the disease process.

With preventive care or prompt emergency dental care, Dr. Fischer also resolves the oral problems he knows best with the most appropriate treatment. Emergency Rooms are overburdened, especially in the present environment. Additionally, ER personnel are not specially trained and experienced with dental conditions and treatments. Often, when patients present to the ER with tooth troubles, they are provided with “Band-Aids” in the form of medications to manage pain. Dr. Fischer’s extensive expertise in dentistry and oral health care sciences informs methods to preserve natural teeth, rebuild smiles, and support long-term wellness.

Generally, if it is an emergency to you, it is an emergency to Evergreen Dental Wellness.

You know yourself best. If something is amiss, you know it. We encourage you, however, to call our office at 703-215-9630 as soon as possible, as discomfort or other symptoms present themselves. You can avoid the trauma, missed work and school hours, and debilitating pain associated with many dental and oral conditions. In addition, the earlier we can intervene with decay or gum disease, the greater the odds that we will be able to help you keep your natural teeth.

If you have experienced any of the following types of pain, you may have decay or infections that require treatment with metal-free restorations and dental implants, available at the office of Richard D. Fischer, DDS:

  • Jarring pain when you bite down on foods, especially hard foods like apples.
  • Pain that lingers for at least 30 seconds after you drink or eat hot, cold, or sweet beverages and foods.
  • Pain that does not go away and throbs so much that you can’t sleep, concentrate at work or on school assignments, or complete basic, day-to-day activities.

When pain is accompanied by symptoms such as a pus-filled pocket on your gums, or facial swelling, you may have an abscess. This bacterial infection requires prompt treatment at the Evergreen Dental Care office. Such oral infections have been known to spread to other parts of the body or to cause systemic infections. If you or a family member is suffering from any of the below symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately:

  • High fever (103 degrees or higher)
  • Problems breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Chills
  • Hypersensitivity to light

We also encourage patients to add a few products to their First-Aid kits. For instance, if they knock out a tooth or damage an existing restoration, Save-a-Tooth and dental cement or adhesive keep the cells in the tooth’s root surfaces “alive,” and temporarily secure crowns or other dental restorations, respectively. Until you can visit us, aching teeth may be eased with warm salt water (about half of a teaspoon of salt per every cup of water), or with topical products like Orajel. Never apply external products inside of your mouth. For instance, aspirin is an acid that can char the inside of your cheeks when placed directly inside the mouth. Use medications and other products only as directed by your dentist.

Do not delay in getting the proactive services you need to avoid the “worst,” and preserve your health, or the emergency dental care to relieve your pain and get back to your healthy, productive self. Contact Evergreen Dental Wellness today.
